San Antonio Guitar Store & San Antonio Guitar Repair

guitars we carry

VISITORS TO SAN ANTONIO We're just 3 miles north of downtown & 4 miles south of the airport, so if you're in San Antonio for business or pleasure we're easy to find. If you find something you like we can ship all over the world or you can just take home your souvenir from Texas. Thanks to this website, we get visitors from everywhere & it's always a pleasure to meet visitors from other parts of the country as well as other nations. Our abilities to communicate in other languages is extremely limited, but we do speak fluent guitarese. Overseas visitors may wish to take advantage of the current dollar rate. Buy you guitar here, play it while you're here & take it home with you. You may find a substantial savings over buying at home.

TEXAS VISITORS: Some folks that come in from smaller towns & rural areas may want to visit the big mega-music stores because it feels much like the mega stores. There are others who prefer a more Mom n' Pop approach to things & appreciate the fact that most of the goods being sold are actually made in the USA; the sales help is knowledgeable about the products being sold & can speak intelligently about things like wood selection, body size, pickups & such without talking down to you.To those people we look forward to meeting you & serving you. Looking for an acoustic-electric guitar? While we do offer many choices in fine acoustic-electric guitars, many of our nicer guitars do not come with factory pickup systems. We believe that it's often wiser to use an after market pickup rather than have a permanent hole in the side of your fine guitar that may or may not remain "state-of-the-art"  while your guitar will be a great acoustic guitar for as long as you take proper care of it. An after market pickup such as the Fishman Matrix Infinity, L.R. Baggs Element Active or I-Beam, or the K&K Pure Western are excellent choices for after market pickups that will not compromise the integrity of your fine acoustic guitar. Some of these provide the player with easily accessed discrete controls inside the sound hole or you can use an external preamp. If you wish to buy a guitar from us we can usually have a pickup installed within 24 hours. Call us for details.

NATIONAL RESO-PHONIC GUITARS! We are extremely proud & pleased to announce that we are going to be dealers for these incredible instruments. Made in very small numbers in San Luis Obispo, California, the new Nationals are among the finest resonator instruments ever made & will take the breath away from those who have not had the experience. It will likely be mid summer before our first guitars arrive. We'll keep you posted.

Limited Edition Martin Guitars:

Coming in May will be The Rosanne Cash OM 28M with Madagascar rosewood & Adirondack spruce, limited edition of 100 signed by Rosanne Cash. This is a stunning guitar with lovely appointments & certain to be an heirloom piece that is a joy to play & hear. MSRP: $7,495.00

Our experience with these Limited Edition Models is that they are absolutely among the finest guitars being made & represent Martin Guitars at their very best. David Bromberg & Norman Blake models have been hanging for mere days before being adopted & these will go quickly, too. You may reserve one of these guitars today & be assured of receiving an outstanding instrument from C.F. Martin & Co. in this their 175th anniversary.

Swing with Ric Ramirez & Mark Waldrop every Wednesday night from 6-9pm at the fabulous Countertop Cafe in beautiful Moore, Texas. About 40 minutes from downtown SA heading south on I-35. Proprietor & chef Pierre is preparing really outstanding food in this most unlikely location between Devine & Pearsall. Ric & I are dishing out our most swinging tunes, concentrating on Sinatra, Dino, Louis Jordan, Louis Prima & Louis Armstrong. The deceptively named Countertop Cafe offers fine dining, excellent service & great music. Check it out some Wednesday night from 6-9 pm. Many of you will remember Ric from his years with San Antonio's best known rockabilly band as the outstanding upright bassist. He's also recorded with Wayne "The Train" Hancock. Now you get to here him sing the kind of stuff he most enjoys singing.

UKULELE NOTES We have been selling quality ukuleles since we opened our doors in 1999. At that time we were the only ones in Texas doing so. You can still come into the store & find someone who actually can & does play the instrument. We are continuing to deepen our commitment to offering serious quality ukuleles by expanding our line to include the very affordable Fortune uke; at $65.00, this will be our "starter" instrument & is vastly superior to any others in this price range. For those wanting a professional quality instrument, consider the fine ukuleles from Bushman or Kiwaya, as well as the fun Flukes & Fleas from Magic Fluke. And for those desiring a true heirloom piece, the new Santa Cruz ukulele will be unsurpassed in tone, beauty & collectibility.

As a former student of the greatest "mainland" ukulele player ever, Roy Smeck, I developed an early appreciation for the diminutive "flea" & treat them with the same respect as a fine guitar or mandolin.

We just got in a wealth of new books & learning material for ukulele including the whole list of Jumpin' Jim's books & Fretboard Roadmaps for ukulele which is an excellent book/cd package for the player who wants to take his/her playing to the next level.

Mandolins Are In!

We are deepening our commitment to mandolin players by offering a variety of quality instruments at all price ranges. Affordable Kentucky & Paris Swing mandolins are where we start for entry level instruments & they represent tremendous value for the budget minded beginner as well as serious pickers. For those looking for a professional level instrument at a great price, consider the wonderful mandolins made by Eastman. Weber Mandolins are outstanding instruments from America's largest mandolin maker & make mandolins that will rival the finest in the world. Bruce Weber & his small staff have been focusing on making the world's best mandolins for a long time now & they know what they're doing. After many years in development, Larrivee will be delivering their mandolins this summer & we have an A style and an F style coming. Like the Larrivee Guitars, players will find the mandolins are an exceptional value in an American made mandolin, with no compromises in quality & craftmanship.

We  also have some used mandos in stock at any time, so call us or stop in & give 'em a spin.

*Reverend Guitars are back! We were dealers for the original Reverend Guitars back "in the day". Well they went through some changes but Joe Naylor & his crew from Michigan have redesigned the entire line of guitars & they are better & cooler than ever. Beautifully made, attractive & distinctive designs & at a price that will appeal to everyone. We're thrilled to be carrying the Reverend line again. The pickups are wonderful, beautiful factory set-up with the most comfortable neck around & the most sensible, user-friendly controls on the planet. Once you use the "bass contour" control knob you'll wish all electrics had them. We're 1st on their list to receive the new Pete Anderson signature model, which is so completely cool I can hardly stand it! If you're wanting that vintage Duane Eddy vibe without the price tag, this one is for you. For about what you'd pay for that major brand Mexican made guitar, you can own a better guitar with a vibe of its' own that's not a clone of everyone else's guitar. The 1st ones have arrived & the response has been extremely positive. We're the only dealer in South Texas so you won't be seeing these at the big mega stores & if you don't try these.......you'll be missing out on some great guitars!

Progression software from Notion Music. Guitarists & songwriters you need this! In store demonstration Saturday Dec. 8th at 10 am. David Stone will be in the store to demonstrate this amazing software that allows you to jam with your computer as well as transpose in both tablature & notation your own original compositions. We'll be offering special discounts. This will be an exciting gift for the guitarist/songwiter in your life.

FISHMAN AURA STOMP BOXES ARE IN! Could be the greatest advance in acoustic technology ever. I confess to being a non-believer at first but I went to the Fishman website & checked out what the Aura was all about. Then I tried out a Martin DC Aura we had here at the shop & I'm a complete believer. The stomp box allows you to use your existing guitar pickup combined with Fishman's "Acoustic Imaging" to create the natural, warm, organic tones from a mic'ed guitar without the problems. Come in & try one out.

Gypsy Jazz Fans! We have in stock a Gitane Lulo Reinhardt  DG-310 model guitar named after Django's talented grandson. Top of the line from Gitane the DG-310 is simply stunning to look at & a revelation to play. If you've never played a Gypsy Jazz style guitar (or never played a good one) you should give this beauty a try. $950.00 w/case

Also just in is the John Jorgenson model mandolin from Paris Swing. Very cool art deco look, manouche inspired instrument with extended fingerboard over an oval  sound hole. F-style scroll, black lacquer with white binding give it a distinctive appearance. $675.00 w/case

Just in;

REGAL RD-40 DOBRO round neck. Sunburst or natural finish is available. Regal's top of the line "Studio" resonators really deliver the classic tone & feel of a great resonator guitar. Lovely mother-of-pearl & abalone urn inlay on the bound headstock & dot inlays on the bound rosewood fingerboard make for an instrument as striking in appearance as it is in tone. MSRP is $499.00. ON SALE for $394.50 with FREE CASE.

CORDOBA soprano ukulele solid koa. Made in Portugal, the historic birthplace of the ukulele, this little rope bound beauty gives that great "island" tone at an affordable price. $219.00

BOGDON BASS BOX. This one is just too much fun! Really well designed 2 string upright bass, the body of which is a heavy-duty cardboard box! Sounds great, light & portable. Perfect for outdoor jam sessions, festivals, etc. Has a pickup, too! Assembled or in kit form.

Larrivee RS4. Tobacco sunburst. The new solid body electric from Jean Larrivee is a true thing of beauty. While he hasn't reinvented the single cutaway solid body guitar, he's made it with some characteristically "Larrivee" touches & made it as well as any electrics being made. Lollar humbuckers, Tone-Pro bridge, Schaller tuners & CTS pots are simply the best hardware available. Luscious flamed maple top on a sculpted mahogany body weighs in at 7lbs 2oz. Forgive me for gushing, but I've had my hands on 100s of fine electrics from all the noted makers & this is right up there with the best being made. Body shape is based on Larrivee's "L" body reduced to electric guitar size which makes for an attractive & distinct design that's at the same time traditional in styling. Discrete truss rod adjustment  access at 23rd fret allows for adjustment along the entire neck length & eliminates the neck weakness at the headstock common to many guitars that make broken necks such a frequent repair. A stunning guitar that's a joy to play, we'd like to invite you to come in & try this one on.

Larrivee RS-4 Charcoal burst. As above.

Larrivee L-03 "Silver Oak" (Grevillea Robusta). Also known as Lacewood & offered as a wood option by many boutique makers, Larrivee has made a limited run of 3 Series guitars with this visually striking & aurally stunning wood. Luthiers claim this wood to be similar to sycamore. I couldn't say, but it is extremely rich sounding with deep basses but not as boomy as rosewood. Light in color with some "bird's eye" kind of effect, body bound with rosewood makes for a dramatic & distinctive look.

MSRP: $1,599.00

Silver Oak D-03 also available

Reverend Volcano. Korina "V" body with honey colored finish. A set neck korina V with killer pickups, electronics, hardware & set-up for 500 bucks? You better believe it! Guitar Player Magazine's editor's pick, this baby will rock with guitars costing 3 times as much. $499.00

Reverend Club King. Orange w/Les-Trem system.  Just in & part of the last ones available with a tremelo system until further notice. Let me say that this guitar is extremely cool & a very versatile instrument. Semi-hollow design allows for jazzy, woody tones, but capable of springy surf sounds, Duane Eddy, Chet, & more. $699.00

Manta Ray HB FM. Tobacco burst. Semi-hollow w/dual humbuckers, set neck design with flamed maple top. $579.00

Buckshot. Cream finish w/single coil bridge & humbucker neck position. Maple neck & board, bolt-on. $499.00

Let's see now... who else in south Texas carries Reverend Guitars? NO ONE!

See my new video clip. (Next time, we will quiet things down before we shoot)

Larrivee L-03E SP

Larrivee PV-09. Parlor guitar with cutaway. Sitka/ Indian rosewood.

Santa Cruz:

FIREFLY. Last month's issue of Acoustic Guitar Magazine reviewed this guitar & it was the most glowing review I have ever seen. There's a noted maker from Texas that makes a fine small guitar, too, but I'll put this beauty up next to any others. Richard Hoover's use of reclaimed woods makes for a superalative instrument that's small enough to travel with but robust tone that will leave the listeners with mouths agape with wonder that something so small can sound so big.

RS 12 fret slope shoulder dreadnought sunburst.

Vintage Southerner (VS). Shorter scale slope shoulder 14 fret dreadnought in sitka spruce & mahogany with the most beautiful sunburst as expected from those wonderful people at Santa Cruz. White bound body and cool looking ivoroid button tuners make for a classic look that's elegant yet understated. Oh yeah, she sounds like million bucks but costs far less.

Ohana Ukuleles: We just got in a few to try & I'm extremely pleased at the quality, price & variety of ukes offered. We have in stock while they last a Vita-Uke concert scale with solid spruce top & mahogany back & sides. My original from the 1920s was an amazing instrument & this lttle beauty does a great job of recreating the look, sound & feel of the old Harmony Roy Smeck Vita-Uke. Also we have a solid mahogany tenor ukulele that really sparkles. For a very reasonable price the Ohana provides a professional quality instrument for those not ready for the expense of a Hawaiian or mainland USA made ukulele.

Weber Mandolins

Yellowstone A-style; antique tobacco burst finish with tortoise binding. Beautiful to look at & an absolute joy to play. I do believe that this is the nicest A-style mandolin we've ever sold here. Lovely figured maple on the back & sides, dark smoky sunburst that just barely lets the toroise binding show through, radiused fingerboard, tone bars. As good as it sounds today, it will only sound better as it gets played for years & years. As usual, we're the only store in San Antonio to carry serious mandolins. Call for price

Gallatin F-style. What an outstanding F at a very reasonable price. Come try it on & compare it with our Eastman F.

Cocktail drums? You bet! Just what you need for a small jazz combo or acoustic based band. We have no intention of becoming a drum shop, but this is an area that all the local stores neglect. www.metrodrum.com

Our kit is "The Hipster"

New used stuff in stock now

Wow! Check the great dreadnoughts we've just got in. Every one is well set-up & extra clean with very low mileage.

Martin D-35. Super clean w/ohsc $1.850.00

Martin D-28 w/ Fishman Aura Ellipse system. A few dings but not bad. ohsc $1,650.00

Martin D-18 Golden Era. Adirondack spruce & mahogany w/ scalloped bracing. K&K Pure Western pickup installed. Amazing guitar! $2,600.00 w/ohsc

Martin HD-28. 2006 exc. condition w/Fishman Rare Earth pickup installed. $1,950.00

Martin D-16R full gloss finish. This is one of the special models made for GC, so the designation is imprecise. It is though, as described, an all solid wood spruce & rosewood Martin dreadnought with simple white binding & gloss finish. ohsc. $1,1150.00

Taylor 410CE. 1998 model with Fishman Pickup system. VG+ w/ohsc. $1,1150.00

Fender Tanqueray Stratocaster 1988 USA. Quite rare & made for just one year. Never sold, but used as prizes for Tanqueray gin. A few scuffs here & there but pretty darned clean & 100% original. w/ohsc $995.00

G&L Legacy 2003. 3-tone sunburst. Lightly played with a few dings & scuffs  but no missing or chipped lacquer, overall exc. condition. Looks great & plays like a dream. w/ohsc $879.00

1930s Marvel Archtop by Slingerland. Overall excellent condition, tight neck joint, good action. Sunburst finish with faux wood figuring that runs vertically (?), genuine mother-of-toilet-seat headstock veneer with deco style painted logo in great shape. Includes original blue ribbon type strap and case also in good condition. Most of these old archtops have too many issues to make them actual playing guitars. Not so with this one. Nice sounding & playing vintage piece cheap. $350.00 SALE: $275.00!!

Kentucky Electric mandolin 5 string late 1970s. This one is extremely rare & was brought in to me by left handed jazz great (& sometimes guitarist with Willie Nelson) Jackie King. I can't find anything about Kentucky 5 strings anywhere, but this vintage beauty is cool as can be & is way nicer than the current 4 string that Kentucky makes. Cool "Mustang" style solid black pickup, Florentine shape contoured body, Kluson 2X3 tuners, lots of play wear & finish checking for a true vintage look & feel. Perfect for Tiny Moore & Johnny Gimble Western swing at a fraction of an old Fender. $750.00

Unicorn A-style mandolin 1981. Carved spruce top, flamed maple flat back & sides. The early days by some  modern mandolin pioneers. w/ohsc $795.00

Gibson Les Paul Studio 1992 wine red. exc- with some dings & buckle rash, but no damage. Gold hardware w/ locking Grovers. Nice older model before the Studio evolved into the complete budget model it is now. $750.00 w/ohsc

Fender Dual 8 Professional Steel guitar. 1949-51? Console model, no pedals. Early black walnut model as described by George Fullerton. Excellent, with beat case. $1,595.00

Guild mahogany soprano ukulele. This one doesn't show up in any books on ukuleles or Guild guitars, but it is labeled "Guild" & I'm convinced that it's from the earliest days of the company from either New York or Hoboken, New Jersey in the 50s. Very similar to a Martin & nicer than the Favillas. Lots of well repaired cracks & not so pretty, but an excellent sounding & collectible vintage ukulele. $225.00

Gibson J-160E 1967. All original. Oversprayed but not too bad. $3,200.00

60a era Trini Lopez/ Barney Kessel style with thin body, double pointed cutaways, DeArmond looking single coils (2)

Peavey T-60 early 80s. Excellent w/ohsc. These were excellent guitars that are finally beginning to get some notice among players & collectors. Great necks, excellent pickups with ahead-of-its'-time circuitry & heavy enough to double as a weapon in a bar fight. The late & very great Texas Bluesman Johnny Clyde Copeland used one as his main axe for many years. Still undervalued on the vintage market. $319.00

Takamine Steve Wariner Limited Edition. Signed & numbered #64. Played but excellent condtion. Solid cedar & mahogany with black finish & abalone 45-style rosette & body trim. Onboard electronics with 5-band EQ. Some buckle rash & play wear, but really quite nice. A steal at $750.00

70s Lab Series L-5 amp

UKULELES:

See above for desription of a vintage Guild soprano ukulele.

1920s Regal Wendell Hall "Red Head" solid koa soprano ukulele. Excellent condition including original case. These were among the few "mainland" ukuleles made from koa. Unusually nice condition with tight neck fit, no cracks, headstock decal is intact against a red background with cool red wooden friction pegs also in great shape & working well. Lovely figured koa top, back & sides. Vintage Guitar Price Guide lists these in this condition at $500-$600. An excellent buy at only $350.00

IF ANY OF THESE ITEMS ARE OF INTEREST, CALL OR EMAIL FOR PRICES, PICTURES, DESCRIPTIONS, ETC.

OUR PRICES ARE EXTREMELY COMPETITIVE.

HARMONICA PLAYERS:

If you haven't tried the Bushman Harmonicas, I suggest that you do. Replaceable phosphor bronze reeds give a bluesy tone that you can't get from other harps & the reeds last far longer & are more resistant to blow out than others. At $29.00 each, they're not the cheapest harp out there, but everyone I've sold one to has come back to buy another & I've yet to hear a single negative comment. We keep most keys in stock &, if we don't have it, we'll get it for you. They also make the best & most comfortable harmonica neck rack that I've seen.

Tex says "Check 'em out"

COCKTAIL DRUMS!!!!???????? You bet. Coming soon we'll have a set made in the USA by the METROPLITAN DRUM COMPANY of Massachusetts. Matthew at Metroploitan has specialized in custom made cocktail drums & these are the absolutely coolest, portable drum kit ever. Unlike the vintage stuff from the 50s & 60s these are made with a separate snare, eliminating the "bleed through" from bass to snare that rendered the whole unit nearly useless. Perfect for small jazz combos or acoustic groups. Takes up about 4 spuare feet of stage space, designed to play standing or sitting makes it ideal for those infernally small stages. yet lots of punch & just the hippest thing around. Our 1st kit is finish in a classic "F*nder" 2-tone sunburst finish. Metroplitan has been gettings lots of excellent reviews & good press lately, so look for the price to go up very soon. This one is a bargain at $850.00

WHAT"S IT WORTH? Figure it out for yourself. We've put our entire research material available to you so you can look it up & do it yourself.
