Home -- Guitar Picks
Guitar Picks ... IT'S THE LITTLE THINGS. No other guitar shop in Texas pays as much attention to and offers the variety of picks that you can find at GUITAR TEX. The reason is simple: Picks make a difference and sometimes a very big difference in tone, feel, speed and agility. No one size or shape is ideal for all players, which is why we have so many to choose from. We carry a great variety of picks for all styles of playing. Our selection of finger picks & thumb picks far exceed those of most other stores. Picks make a big difference. Such a little thing can radically change your playing technique for the better. We are the only store in San Antonio to carry hand made picks & we have had countless converts. Players fuss over their tone & technique, sometimes ignoring the smallest detail that can make a huge difference in tone, comfort & speed. Some players are perfectly content with a basic medium gauge celluloid or tortex pick, but others have found that a well made pick, with a good bevel and comfortable shape can have a marked positive effect on playing skills and tone. Pictures coming soon. ROMA GUITAR PICKS "The hand crafted pick with a Gypsy soul" (www.romaguitarpicks.com). Wow! Did you know that picks can have a soul? I know that a pick can make a huge difference in your playing satisfaction, so come in and try some hand made picks for yourself. I did a gig recently and used a Roma pick for the entire gig, switching back and forth from my 1964 Gibson ES-335 and my 1960s era rebuilt Harmony 12 string. These are indeed great picks and with their unique, sexy look they will make excellent gifts for your guitar player. ROMA Picks also work especially well as mandolin picks. $10.00 each or 2 for $18.00.
We now have an excellent selection synthetic tortoise shell picks made of CASEIN by John Pearse & by Papa's Picks. Casein is a milk by product that produces the most organic & natural sounding tone & comfortable feel this side of genuine (& illegal) tortoise shell. They look like real tortoise shell, too. Papa's has a casein pick that mimics the look of coral that I like a lot because they're brightly colored & easy to see. $12.00 each
V-PICKS is another line of hand finished picks that come in a variety of shapes, sizes, & thicknesses. From mandolin players to shredders, players have found astonishing speed and clarity. And the picks are especially easy to hold onto, so you don't drop them. Different shapes and thicknesses with various points. Some are colored or dayglo. $4.00-$5.00 each
As well as the common picks found in most stores we carry some more specialized types: Fred Kelly Thumb Picks (Chet Atkins/Tommy Emmanuel stylists love these)
Pro Pick Finger Picks. Hand made metal finger picks
Golden Gate Mandolin picks & Thumb picks
Dugain Picks. Hand made in France from organic & synthetic materials. Gypsy Jazz guitarists were the first to take to these wonderful hand made picks. Then the bluegrassers discovered them; then the shredders. Shaped & contoured ergonomically, allowing the player to achieve unexpected speed & clarity. At $16.00-$28.00 they're not cheap, but it seems that no more how you get there great tone comes with some costs. John Pearse faux tortoise picks come mighty close to real tortoise shell & they are legal*! On the way are another type of faux tortoise & faux coral picks by Papa's Picks. $12.00 each & they are wonderful. Players who have had the opportunity to use genuine tortoise shell picks understand that picks can indeed make a great difference in tone & real tortoise shell is the gold standard. These new synthetics are made from casein, which is a milk by-product & it makes for a pick that is as close to the real thing as you can get without killing something. If your pick doesn't matter to you, these won't be of interest. For those of us whose life-long quest has been the best tone possible, it's understood that the plectrum is just as important as the instrument to acheive that goal. My own keychain/pickholder has a Dugain, V-Pick, Wegen, & a John Pearse. Having the right pick lets me relax & play more effortlessly, as well as increasing my speed. *real tortoise shell picks come from endangered sea turtles & have been illegal for decades. Dunlop Ultex, Gator Grip, & Jazz Tone picks
Even our string selection includes products not easily found like FLATWOUND strings for jazz guitar, BLACK NYLON Bass strings, vihuela strings, ukulele strings & much more.
